WINTER IS HERE BUT SPRING IS COMING

Ever felt like you could go into hibernation and only pop back up when you can finally see a flower or a ray of sunshine. That’s exactly how it is surviving New England weather, you want to go into hibernation till May but exams and presentations quash your fantasies.  I know what you’re thinking, it can’t be that bad and you’re right, it’s so much worse and it’s not even the weather itself that’s the problem, it’s how inconsistent it is.

I remember stepping out of my dorm room in a thick winter coat in the middle of February and get strange looks. I assumed there was probably ketchup on my t-shirt or something in my teeth and honestly I couldn’t be bothered. It wasn’t until I stepped out of my building that the sun’s blinding rays hit me and I finally understood the weird glances I received. What was even more shocking to me was that the day before not only was it snowing heavily, but there was a wind storm. I assumed that everyone around me had made the same mistake and they were now sweating through their jackets but all I could see was summer dresses, short t-shirts and shorts wherever I looked. In conclusion, never forget to check the weather forecast. Which I thought was the lesson I learnt, until I was getting dressed for the gym in the evening.

Not wanting to repeat my mistake, I only took a light jacket, congratulating myself for being smart and carrying a jacket having understood the unpredictability of the weather. The weather forecast showed the temperature as 15 degrees (basically a heat wave for Boston) so, satisfied with my shirt and jacket, I skipped as I left my dorm..., only to find the chilliest breeze hit my face as soon as I stepped out.

So when I say the weather in Boston is plain nasty, I mean it. So for everyone planning on visiting any part of New England soon, make sure you carry a thick winter coat, a light jacket, a sweater and a change of shorts and shirt all in your hand cause well, you just never know. Luckily it’s nearing the end of April and while in no way is it even warm, I saw a flower today and the first episode of Game of Thrones and honestly, I think it’s the happiest I’ve been in a while.

AVOIDING THAT FRESHMAN 15

College is all fun and games, that is, until your pants don’t fit anymore. In a country like United States, where fast food sells like water, it is no surprise that   Freshman 15 is a real thing. For those of you wondering,   Freshman 15  refers to the 15 pounds most freshmen are expected to gain in their first semester. I too thought that I wouldn’t fall victim to this, never realised how wrong I would be. While it can be hard to manage classes, a social life and health, all at once; it isn’t impossible. There are many ways one can avoid  Freshman 15 and maybe even lose weight. The biggest factor that not only hinders our metabolism but also our overall performance, is not getting enough sleep. I know it can be a real struggle to get 8 hours of sleep every night but it’s really worth it. If not 8, at least 7 hours of sleep 5 times a week should be your bare minimum. It would also help concentrate better in class and avoid that early morning grumpine...

BREAKING THE ICE

If you end up in the freezing hell of Boston or another city like it, much like me, please be prepared and don’t be like me. The first day back after winter break is never good, you’re homesick, you miss your domestic help and jet lag is at its peak so being unprepared is just going to make the situation a million times worse (no exaggeration). My first day back, I didn’t have snow boots so I slipped and fell in the ice and to make things worse, I had to walk super slowly to avoid falling again which led to me almost being hit by the train. So please, please buy snow boots in advance. I was also dressed very inappropriately for the weather so unlike me, remember to carry a big coat for when you get off the flight and do not rely on the temperature of the airport. Furthermore, if your hands are like mine and super sensitive to the cold, make gloves your best friends.
